University Presbyterian Church (UPC) sponsors Presbyterian
House as a service to the University of Alabama community. We
expect Presbyterian House to be an international community of
students; thus, students from all countries, including America,
are welcome. The church hopes that by living and studying together,
students, many of whom are living away from home for the first
time, will have an enriched social and educational experience
during their time at the university.
It is hoped that a mutually beneficial relationship
can be established between Presbyterian House and UPC. Church
members want residents to know the opportunities available for
service and worship, and, reciprocally, they want to know if the
residents have any interests or needs that can be fulfilled by
the church. UPC is active in a number of social issues within
the Tuscaloosa community and in broader contexts. If residents
are interested in participating in service projects, please contact
the church for ideas. Church members come from a variety of backgrounds
and may be able to assist residents' needs and interests if they
contact the church or church members.
An
optional service opportunity that is available to residents in
the fall semester is parking cars at Alabama home football games.
Volunteers make a small profit, while the bulk of the money collected
from parking supports UPC.
Residents work together to accomplish the necessary
chores of Presbyterian house, i.e., taking out garbage, yard work,
etc. Fulfilling these duties fosters a sense of community and
responsibility.
The monthly rent is $310 (as of January 2012). Each resident is required
to make a deposit of $310 in order to secure a room in Presbyterian
House. This is non-refundable until the resident moves out of
the house and has cleared all accounts with the church office.
Ordinarily, deposits are due on 1 August to ensure a room for
the fall semester, 1 December for a room during the spring, and
1 May for a room during either or both summer terms.
For information about renting a room, contact
UPC.
