Alabama REACH Volunteers

As you may know, Alabama REACH is a program at UA that works with college students who’ve been through the foster care system. One of the support systems that the program makes available to the students is mentoring. Many of the students are first generation college students that are paired with mentors who can provide emotional support as well as guidance in navigating the higher education system. They are in particular need of adult male mentors for their incoming freshman male students. If you’d be interested in being a REACH mentor then please contact Jameka Hartley at jyhartley@aalan.ua.edu or (205) 348-5819.

New Pastor

We welcome the Reverend Cathy Caldwell Hoop as our pastor. Cathy served for eighteen years as Director of Children’s Ministries at Second Presbyterian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. In her letter to the Pastor Nominating Committee, she wrote that much about our church “resonates with me….embracing diversity, being a voice for social justice, encouraging questions…. these are all things that I believe church should be.” Her experience includes service as an interim pastor and as a hospital chaplain. She completed her Master’s in Divinity at Vanderbilt University in 2012. Ordained August 3rd in the Middle Tennessee Presbytery, our call to her was approved August 15th by the Sheppards and Lapsley Presbytery. She and her husband, Lou, are parents of three young adult sons, Joshua, Russell, and Christopher. We will have a formal service of Installation for her on Sunday, September 15th at 3:00 p.m.  You will have an opportunity to meet Cathy at the covered dish luncheon after worship today. Welcome, Cathy!
